IndependentsHall meetup tonight

yea – last minute I know…

The IndependentsHall crew are having a meetup tonight to talk about events so far, info on the space and other items as Alex figures them out.

RSVP and stuff at Upcoming.org

Philly TIP interviews Annie from blogphiladelphia

I was listening to the latest Philly TIP podcast and during the interview they were talking about one of the features that Annie liked about Dodgeball was where you can tell Dodgeball the city your in and it would filter the messages to ones in that area.

I immediately thought of a couple of way to do that with Twitter :)

I could create a bot that people would friend and then send location updates – it would then keep track of events, messages, whatever for that location and msg people anything that matched.

hmm, hey Alex – whatcha think?

facebook.f8 == consume(freetime=True, duration=’weekend’)

oh rapt-tabulous joy!

Just when I thought I was done learning new API’s for a while the Facebook folks have to go an release f8. It’s all over the nets so I’m not even going to start listing links (yet) but it looks like they have done their homework well.

From the start they already have tons of companies with tools targeting it, include an IM client that seems to be XMPP based!

From their forums:

Concerning interop we’re building on top of Jabber/XMPP as well and are very interested in broadening our current system to work with other socially-oriented systems. We really think there is something interesting about hooking together IM with the information social networks provide, and we’d love to do it right.

Good thing I have a ton of yard-work to do – otherwise I think I would be heads-down with the new API all weekend :)

twitter mashup privacy snafu

The whole Twittervision protected updates snafu is one of the reasons my super-sekrit Twitter project was designed from the start to not require any Twitter user account info. The Twitter Blog outlines what was happening behind-the-scenes to cause the issue — turns out it wasn’t a hole in the API but rather an inadvertent use of data that was flagged as protected by Twittervision.

For me it was just easier to do without that data but I can see how Twittervision needed the info because of some of the extra features Dave added.

Update: Oh gnarly issue indeed – a comment in the meish.org article outlines that it was happening to people who didn’t even create Twittervision accounts but rather by people in their *friends* list who had accounts. Because anyone you have friended can see all of your posts Twittervision was able to also see them.

New phrase of the day: Unintended Consequences

blogphiladelphia unconference

The blogphiladephia folks finally got their site squared away and now you can actually see information about the event :)

From the site:

The inaugural BlogPhiladelphia, a social media “unconference,” is taking place on July 12 – July 13, 2007, in Philadelphia, PA.

What:
BlogPhiladelphia is an “unconference”” for those interested in all forms of social media. It’s a central meeting place for everyone working within the realm of social media (online and mobile) to get together and exchange information and ideas.

Who:
Registration is first-come, first-served so register now! There is no fee to attend this “unconference.”

Where:
The conference will be taking place at the Radisson Plaza-Warwick Hotel in Center City, Philadelphia.

Alex had mentioned this event during the last meetup and I had responded that while I knew about it I just couldn’t find any info on it. He had replied that such changes were in the works and voila!

Sadly now I see that our annual San Fran OSAF get-together may overlap! boo, hiss!

Still, just wanted to spread the word about the event and I hope it’s a big success. Heck, even a small success would do :)
