viddler – video sharing

I’ve seen references to Viddler and I’ve seen some interesting videos on Viddler but until I saw Alex Hillman’s first ever video blog did I see the real benefit — inline tags and comments that show up on the timeline.

To me it’s like the first time I read about what hyper-text was – text with inline links that allow you to explore details. Viddler enables this to happen but for videos.

It’s a twist to video sharing that I hope really catches on – here is how Viddler describes itself via their FAQ

What is Viddler?

Viddler is the open video sharing platform where people and businesses upload, tag, and securely share their videos with the world. The only platform that offers tagging, video commenting, and linking — to any moment in video.

Oh, and its always teh roxxorz!

I love viddler for the exact reason you’ve identified. Hyperlinks essentially take a 2d mechanism, text, and make it 3d. The ability to step INTO a document via a single word or set of words, and give the words even more context, is incredible. Giving that value to rich media, like video and audio, is definitely the next move, and Viddler is doing a killer job of innovating that market. Plus, the community aspects of the site are extremely well executed.

During a late night (and hardly sober) conversation with viddler prez Rob Sandie @ SXSW, we talked about some enhancements to add yet another dimension to the deep tagging regiment…but I don’t want to blow anything that they might have in the works :-)

p.s. this comments field is a little too wide, it hides behind the right col.

change the width from col=100 to col=50 and you should be good.
