iPad and how it can be your only computer

I was chatting with fritzy just now and we were discussing the iPad and I suddenly had this AHA! moment.

Given that the iPad will have an optional keyboard and given that you can activate it using wifi and don’t need another Mac to day and given the fact that Apple has really enhanced MobileMe – you now have the ecosystem required to allow the iPad to exist in a home with no other computers.

Think about it – you can turn on your iPad, enter your Apple ID (or sign up for one) and then your online and in the cloud – MobileMe will handle the backup/sync requirements to any iPhone you may have and all you need is WiFi or 3G.

If you do have other computers, that’s just gravy for the experience.

Wow!

how much of the ipad is back to 1984 and a what was old is new again theme? The mac was put out there to make computing simpler/more intuitive than what was previously available. The ipad seems to be trying to do the same type of thing.

no, you cant. & thats my only problem with it. say you want to email a group of pictures to someone in a zip file, or even just uploading pictures to most sites, you would need a specific app for a specific site. for example, my sister uses winkflash for picture developing, which there isnt an app for, so you cant upload them. what would make this perfect for me, is finder. finder, & a built in usb port.
  • but that's not the method most "normal" folks share photos IMO - they select a bunch of photos and then click "share" - boom, the photos are sent to their friend in email. Who is not to say that Apple doesn't build in zip compression also?

you have to realize the whole point of the iPhone/iPad is to *never* show the filesystem to the user - allow them to deal with and manipulate the items in that items context.

its funny, i really think you just kind of gave me a revelation on the ipad. your the first person that has pointed out that they arent showing the file system on purpose. to not look at the data as a file, but instead a picture or a song. i had just played with sending pictures on my ipod touch, which i cant say ive ever done before, & sure there is the five limit, though id imagine the ipad wouldnt have that restriction depending on the email provider.

you seriously blew my mind with that point of never showing the file system. its the only thing ive been wanting, because its the only way ive thought of using a computer. im having a real turn around with this ipad concept. though, i do have to say, i would love it if apple did include zip compression the same they have on the Mac OS, but i cant imagine it being a feature until an OS or 2nd/3rd gen update. still though, your point really has me turning my opinion around. thank you.
  • hehe - i'm glad I could pass along that revelation as it was shown to me back when I was starting to do some iPhone dev work. I kept asking "where are the file api's!" and it wasn't until a friend asked me simply "who cares where it is, the OS knows" did I start to make that mental change.

so yea, very cool to see someone else go thru the same - thanks!

apparently, it still doesn't support Flash.
  • the prototypes apparently did not - but we need to wait and see if the final version will. Safari and WebKit both have flash plugins and more and more sites are supporting h.264 (too bad OggTheora is no where to be found)

but yea, I can see Flash being an issue for some
